Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
