EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
