Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces growing in power within the city.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the first table of characters who will branch out from the main group to begin their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Considering an extensive roster, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at the same party would be impossible.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem unsuited, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to proceed after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could assist the party access places they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to learning which players will be where in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
