Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
